Digital photography? Make money with a camera? Yep, they are not mutually exclusive. I’d like to take a few minutes to introduce you to something you may have never heard of that can make you more than a little money on a regular and recurring basis.

Websites called stock photos sites are paying commissions for everyday digital photos. Now you can have the opportunity to make a little or a lot of extra money by submitting your digital photography and make money with a camera. People like ad agencies, web designers, magazines and graphic artists are all scrambling for good quality digital photos over everyday things for their projects. The stock photo sites allow people like us to upload photos and make them available to these type of people. And when they are downloaded for use, the website pays the owner of the photo a commission.

What sort of photos do these people want? Virtually anything except a picture of your Aunt Glady’s (no offense). Some examples seen recently included a simple glass of wine, a brick wall, children playing, a beach and even a patch of grass! Lord knows how they will be used, but used they are. At various times, the stock photo sites give notice they will no longer take certain types of photos because of overstock on that subject, but the list is very short compared with all the rest they do want. Even if you don’t like photography, you can make money with a camera.

If you like photography on the other hand, this could be a fun way to make money for you. Digital photography; make money with a camera? Sounds like a dream job to me.

How much commission do these websites pay? It can vary, but usually 20% and up from the download fee paid by the user. It also depends on the size of the photo. Very small images pay around $.30 for each download and extremely large photos can net for over $8.00 each and up. It may not sound like much, but consider that some pictures get downloaded hundreds or even thousands of times. This can really add up.

That brings up another point. Most of the stock photo websites have a quality control standard in place. You first register at the site, then submit a number of photos for a human review process. It can take a bit of time to get this done sometimes, but getting approved is not difficult if you follow their guidelines.

A good suggestion would be to find all the websites you want to submit to, get registered and read about their submission rules. Also see if they are asking for certain kinds of photos at the time or conversely, if there are genres they don’t want or need right now. This could also help you getting in.

If you already have a digital camera, a computer and it’s connected to the Internet, you’re virtually in business already! There’s really nothing else you need, just a good eye and the sense to snap the shutter! It’s amazing how the Internet just keeps turning up new areas of business; photography, make money with a camera!
